Shaka Shack
The Project
The Shaka Shack is a tiny home innovation designed to be an alternative to a caravan when heading out to a vacation destination. It can be removed from its trailer and placed as a more permanent structure to frequent, live in, or rent out.
The Shaka Shack is an open kitchen/bedroom/living area concept. The sleeping area is beside the kitchen, with a double bed (memory foam mattress) that converts into a daybed/couch. Beneath the bed are three large drawers for additional storage. The bathroom has a full-sized shower, a slide away composting toilet, wardrobe, closet, and overhead storage.
The Shaka Shack is constructed with a steel frame, stained pine weatherboards, an iron roof, plywood interior, earthwool insulation in the walls and ceiling, and polystyrene insulation in the floor. It has plenty of windows and a 4.5m2 pull-out deck. The deck for this unit comes attached and only needs to be levelled out wherever the Shack is set up. There is a place for holding fresh water and waste water, and two solar panels with the batteries and regulators/inverters that go with them for power. The kitchen comes equipped with: Macrocarpa bench top, 95L LPG Fridge, breakfast bar, Sink, 3 Burner- Grill & Oven, and cabinetry.
Low Cost
The reason why the Shaka Shack is low cost is primarily due to its small size, which means that there were fewer materials needed and less labour involved in its creation. Cost savings in these areas meant that high quality building materials could be used.
While not a building cost the solar power system is an added value, as one doesn’t have to pay for electricity or pay to connect to an electrical source.
The price of $70,000 is the unit’s base cost. Purchase of the trailer is an additional charge, along with other modifications or inclusions that you might like.
About Tiny by Taylor
Taylor Dewis has been in the construction business for over 12 years and is a qualified builder. Earlier in his career, Taylor experienced living in a caravan while working and surfing in Portugal for an extended period of time. Finding life to be easier living in a tiny space, a passion for the design of smaller living spaces began to evolve. After several years of research into the subject, the company Tiny by Taylor was born and not long after came the Shaka Shack.
Dewis also fabricates custom orders, incorporating a customer’s idea or personal requirements into a build. These custom orders can include builds with a larger footprint than the Shaka Shack design, and can be sold at various stages of completion if desired.
